This book was so exhilarating and such a delight to read. It's a story about a high school senior named Devorah Banks, who's life is in such a mis-hap. Having turned on her friends two years ago for Bryan, Devi feels lonely, heartbroken and extremely worried about getting into a good college. Devi's only wish is that she could re-do everything that she has done in her life. After accidentally dropping her phone in a wishing fountain, Devi briskly dries it off and starts pressing buttons, hoping that it will still work. After several attempts of trying to call home, Devorah is shocked to find that it can only call one number, her at 14 years old. After the initial shock, Ivy (the alias name given to the senior Devi) and Frosh ( the alias name given to the fourteen year old Devi) plot to fix all the wrong things that had happened at Ivys age because everything that her former self (Frosh) does, changes the future, in this case Ivy's present. They do everything they can to change her life by starting with friends, Bryan and family fortune. Though it turns out, they both realise that they don't need to change everything in her life, they just need to learn how to balance everything out.
Relationships are very important to Devi. After losing her friends and Bryan, she feels empty and lost. She wishes to reclaim the strong relationships she had with them in her freshmen years, though she can only do it with the help of Frosh. When Frosh does something new or unusual in her junior year, it has a major effect on Ivy's present life. For example, when Ivy gives Frosh the tatslotto numbers. Even before Frosh hands in her winning ticket, Ivy's life is turned around immediately. One minute she is walking down carpet stairs, and the next she is in her brand new kitchen. No ripped wallpaper, no greasy tiles and spiderwebs in the corners. Devi looked around and already started to like her new home. Or so she thought. After hearing that her parents were now divorced, Devi makes a quick rush to her phone to call back Frosh and tell her not to hand in her winning lottery ticket. She does so right in the knick of time. This showed both junior and senior Devi to not jump to what sounds like best, so they agreed to discuss any major changes with each other first.
Gimme a call has such a fun and interesting concept. It's a little bit quirky, though thats just one of the reasons why it makes the book so enjoyable. It captivated me from beginning to end with its humorous and compelling story line. I found it really odd and fascinating at times, like how the future was affected by the smallest things. I had such a pleasure reading this book even though i have read it over and over again. I really enjoyed the ideas that Sarah Mlynowski had come up with. Who would have thought that doing the slightest thing in the past could effect the future so significantly? Gimme a call is one of my two favourite books, and i would give a 4 1/2 star rating. This was such a pleasurable, exciting and funny book to read, thank you very much Sarah Mlynowski!
Gimme a call is a hard to put down, engaging and worth while book that i would happily recommend to anyone. It will leave you flying threw the pages with Sarah Mlynowski's silly/clever ideas!
